Well and Good
This year in Los Angeles, a handful of new fitness studios from barre to boot camp and dance cardio opened their doors, giving Angelenos a very good reason (besides the occasionally gross day) to head inside for their workouts.
But just a few of these newcomers and longstanding favorites generated high levels of buzz, becoming the subject of social chatter and dinner conversations. In 2014, these nine workouts did just that, generating tons of excitement and making people really talk (and sweat).
Here are Los Angeles’ most talked about workouts of 2014, listed in alphabetical order. —Melisse Gelula and Rachel Marlowe

Founder (and General Hospital actor) Kodi Kitchen created this fun, fusion workout and pretty Fairfax studio, which opened this spring. Classes feature some light dance cardio alongside Pilates and toning moves at a U-shaped “barre” that also detaches from the wall to become a strength-training weight. Way to multitask. www.bestustudio.com
Body By Simone (BBS)
Simone de la Rue and her high-octane dance-cardio classes already had women hooked in New York City, and news spread fast when BBS opened in LA this spring. Now cool Angelenos in chic printed leggings flock to her West Hollywood studio, filled with trampolines, floor-to-ceiling resistance bands, and a handful of A-list celebs like Emmy Rossum. www.bodybysimone.com
The city’s beloved, homegrown cycling studio (which counts Madonna as a fan) has continued to get tons of props for its non-intimidating (yet killer) interval-based classes, amazing instructors like Nichelle Hines, and now, pretty, roomier new West Hollywood digs across the street to showcase them all. Next up? A studio in Santa Monica opening in 2015. www.cyclehousela.com
Some like it hot. Like Jessica Alba, who nonstop Instagrams her sweatfests at this yoga studio, with locations in Santa Monica and Brentwood. Its celeb factor and luxe amenities (from air quality to Pressed Juicery) are making it an ever-popular place to do classes, which range from a static 26-pose standing series and a vinyasa flow to sculpting with weights in 100 to 109 degrees. www.hot8yoga.com
This stylish boxing studio in Fairfax with circuit training, boxing drills with trainers, and heavy bag work is a hit with model-actresses, who’ve essentially become ambassadors for the gym (and for manicures with shorter nails). You could call the concept—and clientele—a knockout. www.prevaillosangeles.com
The uber popular boutique brand continues to woo more riders than ever. Yellow bikes are now in six LA neighborhoods (plus Newport Beach), and instructor name-dropping and mention of tap-backs, bike dancing, and hairography are becoming part of the healthy Angeleno’s vocab. David Beckham’s repeated appearance at the studio this year also didn’t hurt the brand’s cool factor. www.soul-cycle.com
Megaformer-style Pilates studios are all over LA, but this one in Pasadena, newly opened by beloved instructor Jennifer Yates (who used to teach in Venice) proves the power of the fitness pro to drive a studio and command a following. Metamorphosis became a super hot ticket workout this year, as did scoring a spot in her signature Ride & Shred class (cycling and Megaformer workout). www.studiometamorphosis.com
Word is out about the super friendly (and “hunky”) Australian trainers behind this West Hollywood boot-camp-style workout, who’ve made really hard HITT classes (with TRX, weights, and rowing machines) not just a great sweat sesh, but a really good time. www.trainingmatela.com
It’s hard to stand out on LA’s competitive barre scene, but Xtend Barre West Hollywood (with 250-plus locations worldwide) has grabbed the spotlight this year. Women flock here for the athletic classes filled with ballet moves that also jack your heart rate, and inventive ones like Xtend Barre Stick. www.xtendbarrewh.com
